Gone are the days where people take a little time out of their busy Christmas build-up schedules to make gifts and decorations for their home. Nowadays time rules our schedules and buying Christmas decorations are just another routine year after year. Traditionally, decorations for the home used to be made in the home. Well, I challenge you to try and make your own Christmas decorations and decorate your house with a personal touch. You don't have to be the most creative and crafted person and it's not expensive either. Here are some tips and hints to get you started.
In preparation, go around the house and find materials and pieces that you think are potential items to work with. Check your jewellery box, arts & crafts box, sewing box and hunt around for old ribbons, buttons of all colours, shapes and sizes. You'll be surprised what you can collect together in quite a short amount of time. For deciding what Christmas decorations you need, make a list of the areas you want to decorate; the tree, the kitchen, the lounge and consider if you want the decorations to fit neatly in the space available, to make them fit to size, or just see what you come up with. It's a fun challenge after all.
A classic idea of picture ornaments can be made by searching through old photos and getting copies made of your chosen pictures. You could get these printed on fabric or material such as a t-shirt, sweatshirt or family cushion. Old Christmas themed paper, cards, towels, fabric or tablecloths can be used cut into strips to make table runners, quilts, tree skirts or even gift bags.
Let nature in by collecting some pine branches to add a touch of decor that's traditional. Be sure to cut them last minute as the pine needles will not last long and drop. Collecting old twigs and spray paint them red, gold or silver and place them in a vase can be a Christmas decoration in the making. Hang ornaments or cards from the branches for a fuller decorative effect. Pine cones are another classic decoration that can be a centrepiece, very effective sprayed gold, or whichever is your chosen colour scheme this year.
Looking in magazines and online for further inspiration is a good way of getting your creative juices flowing. Funnily enough, old Christmas postcards are a great source of inspiration. And remember, your home doesn't need to be a perfect catalogue or front shop window look. There's not a price on homemade gifts that is special and unique.
