Custom framing isn't just the idea of presenting a picture or poster in a better way, it's also the idea of preserving the memory that came along with it. Typically pictures and any type of art, specifically paintings, will always be the most favored pieces to be displayed on walls. But there are tons of other options to decide from when it comes to wall decor. Most customers will picture frame sentimental family heirlooms or other souvenirs they have come across throughout their life because it's more unique piece that should be hung. Custom frames are the most conventional way to display anything that's been hidden away, such as jewelry.
Another example of something to get custom framed would be a vintage silk scarf and it would excellent in a handcrafted wood frame. A good tip to keep in mind when get a vintage piece framed, is choosing acid free or archival mat and UV protected plexi glass. Regular glass is primarily used with a traditional picture frame but in that particular case, plexi glass is the safest option because it's lighter in weight and it won't shatter. Custom framing personal mementos can also make for an original display piece and the way in which you custom frame it, portrays how well you want it shown. While working in a local custom framing store, I have come across customers who have framed anything imaginable. Aside from vintage family photos, customers have framed jersey's, wrestling belts, cookware, etc. Another popular thing that customers have been bringing in to get custom framed are collages. Collages are generally a fun item to get framed because it is a collection of photos that have tremendous meaning to that person.
Often times, customers usually frame their collages alone but there have been cases in which there are small souvenirs or items that have been included. For all the customers I've personally helped, there have been only a small number of them who have had a real deeper meaning to getting their particular piece custom framed. It's surprising sometimes that some customers still manage to have vintage family photos or heirlooms from their childhood that's still in decent condition. In the area the store I work at, our primary customers are production companies and usually our main piece to get framed are posters from upcoming movies or television shows. Again, there are some cases in which we get a few customers who get something with extreme sentimental value custom framed.
Aside from photos and collages, we have come across some customers who have gotten vintage records or music memorabilia custom framed. For something like a music record, we would typically use a shadow boxed frame because it is much taller than your typical frame. A shadow box frame is simply a deep frame, similar to an open box that is topped with glass or plexi glass. The contents of a shadow box have almost no limits because the deeper the frame is, the more space we came play it. Essentially, with a shadow box frame, anything can be custom framed. With a little extra thought into a customers hobbies or interests, a themed shadow box is a creative way in an easy custom picture framing project. Wall decor does not necessarily need to be reserved solely for art, such as paintings, and pictures. For customers who are looking for a face lift in their interior design of their home, something other than traditional watercolor or oil painting, custom picture framing a family heirloom is a great way in keeping that particular piece for years. Again, custom framing isn't just about presentation but preservation of the memories.
